Disappearance day of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur

Today, Sunday, July 11, 2010, is the disappearance day of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur an Acharya in our Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya. ISKCON, Vrindavan also celebrated this festival. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur was born on September 2nd, 1838 in Bir Nagar near Navadwip, in the state of West Bengal in India. His father is Bir Chandra Dutta and mother is Jagan Mohini Devi Dasi. He was given the name Kedarnath Dutta. (more…)

ISKCON Vrindavan           It is the last few weeks of the summer and as usual Vrindavan, is experiencing hot weather. The temperature is rising above 45 degrees. Despite the extreme weather this did not deter the stream of visitors that come to Krishna Balaram temple. We at Krishna Balaram temple are observing that unlike in the past, summer is as lively as other seasons.
      Groups of students practicing Krishna Consciousness, families of devotees, are visiting  from various parts of the country. (more…)

Chandan Yatra

chandan-yatra           On the day of Aksaya Tritiya in Vrindavan, all large Goswami Temple Deities are covered with chandan Paste and not a bit of cloth used to cover the deities in the afternoon. The festival is also celebrated in our ISKCON Vrindavan temple and it usually continues for 21 days with the Utsava Vigrahas covered in chandan. The Deities are covered completely with chandan (sandalwood paste), which provides the Lord relief from the scorching heat of summer in the month of Vaisakha/Jyestha (May/June). (more…)

PURUSOTTAMA ADHIKA MASA 2010 (15TH APR to 15TH MAY)

              Purusottama month, or adhika masa (extra month) is also called mala masa (dirty month) by the performers of karma-kanda because they cannot get any material fruitive results from their worship during this month. Our acaryas say it is called mala masa because devotional activities performed in this month destroy the dirt and contamination caused by sins. It is called adhika (extra) masa because Sri Krishna has placed all His potencies, mercy, blessings in this month, and also because one gets more results from any pious act. Only works of devotion (Krsna-bhakti) give results in Purusottama month.
